The ACC is about to change with the addition of three schools. That means the hierarchy of the way things were could change, too. With a bunch of sports involved, those hierarchies can vary depending on the sport. Some hierarchies are more difficult to figure out than others.
Hierarchies can be subjective, too, which is why we tend to make listicles on this site that rank things. We don’t think we’re necessarily right or wrong about the rankings we make, but we use our own judgment in determining these things. That’s not to say we’re experts, and it’s how we can start conversations among fans, which means we’ve done our jobs.
In this case, with the incoming ACC additions, we’ve decided the time is right to rank the arenas the conference’s men’s basketball programs play in. Some absolutely are better than others, and you’ll see that on our list. So without further adieu, here it is:

Maples Pavilion (Stanford)Robert Edwards-USA TODAY Sports
The Cardinal have had trouble drawing, and the arena doesn’t do much to compensate for a dead atmosphere.
17
Moody Coliseum (SMU)Jim Cowsert-USA TODAY Sports
Incumbent ACC programs might experience some culture shock coming into an arena that’s tiny by conference standards.
16
Conte Forum (Boston College)Paul Rutherford-USA TODAY Sports
Not a very cool place or exciting atmosphere to watch basketball in a city that would much rather watch its championship-winning professional team.
15
Petersen Events Center (Pittsburgh)Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports
This arena has some serious potential when the Panthers are good, but even then, it’s not worthy of showing up when the city’s professional teams simply demand their attention more.
14
Tucker Civic Center (Florida State)Glenn Beil-USA TODAY Sports
This place offers moments here and there as well as some good views, but it won’t draw the way the school’s football program does.

This arena easily could rise up the rankings as ACC teams see it more, so consider this a placeholder until we get used to it.
12
Littlejohn Coliseum (Clemson)Ken Ruinard-USA TODAY Sports
The place is fine for what the program offers, and it probably doesn’t need to get better than it already is.
11
Joel Coliseum (Wake Forest)Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports
Deacon Demons fans show out for their team, and this place can be intimidating to play at because of its size and the noise that fills it.
10
Watsco Center (Miami)Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports
The Hurricanes have put together some solid teams recently, and this building gives their fans a homey feel so that they don’t feel too far from the action.
9
McCamish Pavilion (Georgia Tech)Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports
Whether the Yellow Jackets are good or bad, these fans show up, and there isn’t a seat in the place that would impede them bringing their best to every game.
8
Purcell Pavilion (Notre Dame)Matt Cashore-USA TODAY Sports
The arena is a classic in its own right, and it deserves more attention than it gets, especially when the fans pack the place.
7
PNC Arena (NC State)Rob Kinnan-USA TODAY Sports
It’s hard to beat sharing a building with a professional hockey team, which means the fans won’t make it easy on you when the Wolfpack are rolling.
6
Cassell Coliseum (Virginia Tech)Michael Shroyer-USA TODAY Sports
This photo alone should show you that fans are right on top of the action, and “Enter Sandman” is no less menacing than at football games.
5

This arena deserves much better than the awful Cardinals teams of recent years because it’s as good as any in college basketball when it hosts a winning program.
4
JMA Wireless Dome (Syracuse)Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports
ACC teams hoping to make it to the last weekend of the college basketball season can use this as a training ground as they can see what it’s like playing in a football stadium.
3
John Paul Jones Arena (Virginia)Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports
The Cavaliers have become a powerhouse in recent years, and this arena is a good size for such a team that looks forward to a future that appears brighter with each passing year.
2
Dean Smith Center (North Carolina)Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports
The Carolina blue that fills these seats regularly indicates an absolute love affair with the Tar Heels, and this place is the right size as far as viewing and making noise.

For better or worse, the Blue Devils are the gold standard of college basketball, and the Cameron Crazies alone are enough to make visiting this place an item on the bucket list of everyone who loves the sport.
